“Who wrote…?” is one of the most common general knowledge question types. A random list of books and authors is hard to remember, but grouping them by type gives your memory something to hold on to. When you see a book title in the exam, first ask: what kind of book is this? That alone often narrows the answer.

Group 1: Books by Pakistani leaders

These are autobiographies and memoirs, so the author is usually the person whose life or views the book describes.

Book Author
Friends Not Masters Ayub Khan
The Myth of Independence Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
Daughter of the East Benazir Bhutto
In the Line of Fire Pervez Musharraf
Pakistan: The Heart of Asia Liaquat Ali Khan (speeches)
The Emergence of Pakistan Chaudhry Muhammad Ali

Tip: “Friends Not Masters” was about relations with foreign powers, a natural theme for a military ruler dealing with superpowers in the 1960s.

Group 2: Books about the independence era

Book Author
Jinnah of Pakistan Stanley Wolpert
India Wins Freedom Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
The Discovery of India Jawaharlal Nehru

Group 3: Classics of Muslim scholarship

Book Author Field
Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun History and society
Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (Canon of Medicine) Ibn Sina Medicine
Kitab-ul-Hind Al-Biruni Study of India
Kitab al-Manazir Ibn al-Haytham Optics

Tip: link each scholar to his field. Ibn Sina is medicine, Ibn Khaldun is history, Al-Biruni is India, Ibn al-Haytham is light. The book titles then follow naturally.

Group 4: Persian poetry

Work Poet
Shahnameh Firdausi
Gulistan and Bustan Sheikh Saadi
Masnavi Maulana Rumi

Group 5: World literature and ideas

Book Author
The Republic Plato
The Prince Machiavelli
The Wealth of Nations Adam Smith
Das Kapital Karl Marx
Hamlet Shakespeare
War and Peace Leo Tolstoy
Paradise Lost John Milton
Animal Farm George Orwell
Don Quixote Cervantes

Tip: pair opposites. The Wealth of Nations (Adam Smith, the founding text of free-market economics) and Das Kapital (Karl Marx, a critique of capitalism) are often placed together as distractors.

Group 6: Urdu literature

Urdu books and their writers deserve their own list. See our Urdu poets and writers guide.

How to revise

Cover the author column and recall each name. When you miss one, say the book’s type aloud first (“a memoir by a Pakistani leader…”). Often that context brings back the name. Then test yourself with our Famous Books and Authors MCQs.
